What is mystery shopping? A plain-English guide for UK businesses
In short
Mystery shopping is when a business pays real people to use its service as ordinary customers, by phoning, using the website, ordering online or visiting in person, and then report honestly on the experience. It shows owners what customers actually experience, so they can fix problems before they cost sales or lead to bad reviews.
How mystery shopping works
A mystery shopper behaves exactly like a normal customer. They might ring to ask about prices, try to book an appointment, use your live chat, place an online order or walk into your shop. Staff don't know they are being assessed, so the shopper sees the same service your real customers get on an ordinary day.
Afterwards the shopper fills in a report. A good report covers:
- How quickly they were answered or served
- How friendly and helpful staff were
- Whether the person they dealt with knew their stuff
- What went well, and what could have been better
- Proof of the visit, such as a screenshot, call log or receipt
Why businesses use mystery shoppers
Most unhappy customers never complain. They just don't come back. Mystery shopping catches the problems they would never tell you about: a phone that rings out at lunchtime, a checkout that fails on mobile, an answer that sends people to a competitor. Fixing those is often the cheapest way to win more business, and it is the foundation for earning better reviews.
Types of mystery shopping
- Phone mystery shopping: tests how calls are answered, handled and followed up.
- Website and online mystery shopping: tests your website, booking, live chat and online ordering.
- In-store mystery shopping: tests the welcome, service, cleanliness and the experience in person.
How much does mystery shopping cost?
Prices in the UK vary widely, from tens of pounds per visit for detailed in-person assessments to a few pounds for short phone and website checks. With PaidReview every visit costs £5, ordered in bundles of 50, 100, 250 or 500. Read our full guide to mystery shopping costs.
Getting the most from your reports
- Look for patterns across many visits rather than reacting to one report.
- Share the good comments with your team. Praise works as well as criticism.
- Fix the most common problem first, then measure again.
- Once the experience is right, invite customers to review you honestly.

Common questions
Is mystery shopping legal in the UK?
Yes. Mystery shopping is a long-established and legal way to assess customer service. What is illegal is posting fake reviews or reviews that hide that the reviewer was paid or rewarded.
Do staff know they are being mystery shopped?
Not at the time of the visit. Many businesses tell staff in general that mystery shopping takes place, which tends to lift standards on its own.
How many mystery shops do I need?
One visit is an anecdote. Fifty or more starts to show reliable patterns, which is why PaidReview sells visits in bundles starting at 50.
